Arlington Reads: Video of David Finkel, Tim O'Brien

Words are inadequate to express how happy I am about our 2011 Arlington Reads: The Soldier's Story program.

From the meetings last fall when we selected our theme until now, we have been on an incredible journey and have touched the lives of many.  I want to extend my thanks to our authors David Finkel, Tim O'Brien and Sara Lewis Holmes for bringing their stories to us in person, to Combat Paper Project curator Tara Tappert for allowing us to host the art exhibit, to all the staff who worked to hard to pull the program together, and to all of you who participated by opening your hearts and minds to this challenging theme in these complicated times.

What this program means for me was best summed up when I overheard the brief exchange between a Vietnam helicopter pilot and infantryman Tim O'Brien - each expressing heartfelt respect for the work of the other, in a shorthand language of shared experience and humility that only they could truly understand. It has been an honor to not only meet these authors and hear their stories, but more importantly to create these connections within our community.

Thanks again for your part in making this a terrific Arlington Reads,
Diane
