Join us Saturday, May 28, at 2 p.m. for a discussion with Saloma Miller Furlong, author of Why I Left the Amish, at Central Library.Now a mother with grown children of her own, Salmoa Miller Furlong writes of a painful childhood in a family defined by her father's mental illness, her brother's brutality, her mother's frustration and the austere traditions of the Amish community. Furlong traces the genesis of her desire for freedom and education and chronicles her conflicted quest for independence. The book is an eloquent, revealing portrait of life within, and without, the frequently misunderstood Amish world.
