SHARP at the ALA: Melville and the Book
Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP) American Literature Association Conference May 25-28, 2006 Hyatt Regency San Francisco in Embarcadero Center
Over the last twenty-five years, the texts of Herman Melville have lent themselves to historicist, multiculturalist, and postcolonial studies. More recently, his career has engaged the ?aesthetic turn? in literary criticism, as well as inspiring literary biographies by Hershel Parker (1996, 2001) and Andrew Delbanco (2005). What light does book history shed on Melville?s life and work, and on these materialist and aesthetic impulses within the institution of literary studies? SHARP invites papers for a panel on Melville and the culture of writing, printing, and reading, from his day to ours. Possible topics include: editing Melville; the Melvillian library; receiving Melville; Melville as magazinist; canonizing Melville; the transmission history of Melville?s texts; digital Melville.
