Cherrydale Chestnut Tree Nominated for Notable Tree Status
Does the Cherrydale Branch Library Chestnut Tree have the girth to win awards? Maybe...According to County Natural Resource Specialist Greg
Zell, our tree was recently measured and scored by a Tree Steward volunteer. Volunteers had hoped the Chestnut tree would be under consideration for Champion Tree status (so designated by virtue of "size", i.e. the largest of that species in Arlington), but it is not eligible because - as a Chinese Chestnut tree - it is not native to Virginia.
However, relative size is an element for consideration when deciding on a Notable Tree nomination. It will be compared to other like trees that have been nominated in the past. The scoring system includes the sum of the circumference (waist size) in inches, the height in feet, and 25% of the average crown spread (the measurement of the
dripline or outer branches of the tree). Other factors considered are attractiveness, if it is an unusual species, particularly old, if it represents a neighborhood natural feature, etc.
We should know the County's decision in January.
