Good books encourage great conversation.
What difference can one person make? More than you can imagine. Think of Greg Mortenson and the difference he is making in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The focus he brings to building schools is nothing short of intense.
Less well known, but equally intense, Dr. Paul Farmer has made it his mission to provide quality medical treatment for some of the poorest populations in the world. In the process he has helped raise the standard of health care in underdeveloped areas of the world. Dr. Farmer is a physician and an anthropologist, and according to at least one of his former patients in Haiti, he's a god.
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder is Dr. Farmer's story. Reviewers have said it will restore your faith in the ability of one person to make a difference. Read it for yourself and then join a discussion of the book at the Madison Public Library. Rev. Sandra Larson, First Presbyterian Church, will lead the discussion on Tuesday, May 25, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Copies of this book are available to check out at the Public Library. Inquire at the circulation desk.
