What Do These Books Have in Common?

Banned Books Week 2011 - Central Library
The Grapes of Wrath. A Clockwork Orange. The Outsiders. Their Eyes Were Watching God.

These books - and many more - have been challenged, banned and sometimes even burned, by communities or governments who were uncomfortable with the ideas, events or language they contained.

Banned Books Week, held annually during the last week of September, celebrates the importance of the First Amendment and our freedom to read. And as in past years, we have created book displays to call attention to the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

This year, we have added QR-code accessible video book blurbs to our displays, which are narrated by Library staff and friends. In each video, someone shares a personal story about what their favorite challenged book means to them, or reads from a favorite passage.

Anyone with a smart phone can scan the QR-code on the back of one of the books on display, and automatically view one or all of the videos.

The videos are also available online for those without smart phones.
