Happy 119th Birthday Robert Lawson!
Tuesday, October 4, is the birthday of children's author and illustrator Robert Lawson
.
Lawson, born in New York City, studied art at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. When America entered the first World War, he joined up as a camouflage artist and worked with several other well known artists in France. Upon his return he began illustrating children's books. He has illustrated dozens of well-known titles like The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, and Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. He also authored and illustrated seventeen books of his own and became the first person to be awarded both a Caldecott Medal for They Were Strong and Good, and a Newbery Medal for Rabbit Hill.
