Underground Railroad in Iowa -- Reminisce Society -- October 2012
It was neither ?underground? nor a ?railroad,? yet the Underground Railroad transported passengers to a destination they had only heretofore dreamed of: FREEDOM. Over 100 Iowans helped with the Underground Railroad in our state, assisting runaway slaves from Missouri and Arkansas on their way to freedom in Canada, and their story?as well as the stories of the freedom seekers themselves?form a fascinating chapter in Iowa?s Civil War era history. Please join the Reminisce Society on Tuesday, October 23rd, at 10:00 a.m. in the library?s meeting room, as our friends from the African American Museum of Iowa will be returning with this very special program about the Underground Railroad in Iowa. From the ?safe houses? and ?station agents? to the ?conductors? and the ?passengers? themselves, you will be entertained and enlightened by the AAMI staff. Reminisce Society programs are free and open to everyone, so please plan to join us! For further information, please call the library?s Reference desk at 641-682-7563, extension 205.
