Can I read an eBook from the Library on my Kindle?
Not yet, but you will be able to soon!April 22, 2011 - This week Amazon announced that they are working with OverDrive to allow
Library eBooks to be read on the Kindle!December 7, 2010 - OverDrive released a
Wireless App for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and Android phones, for downloading EPUB eBooks and MP3 eAudiobooks. Check our OverDrive site for a link to get the latest OverDrive Media Console version, and read about the EPUB eBook Collection.
Arlington Library also offers eBooks which can be read on a PC or laptop (from NetLibrary. Some NetLibrary titles are also downloadable now.) In addition, Mobipocket eBooks (from OverDrive) can be read/downloaded to a PC/laptop/netbook -- plus compatible mobile devices like BlackBerry, Palm OS devices and Smartphones. Unfortunately, Mobipocket Reader is not supported on Mac or Linux systems. Our Mobipocket downloadable eBooks collection employs Digital Rights Management (DRM), which prevents copying and forces the content to expire on your device at the end of the lending period. This kind of safeguard is still very important to book publishers.
Dedicated eBook reader devices- Kindle devices accept Kindle titles purchased from Amazon. However, a few free Kindle titles may be downloaded to your PC or other devices, with the Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPhone reader. Look for free Kindle titles.
- The Library does not offer any eBook reading devices for checkout, due to cost and compatibility limitations.
Why Can?t We All Just Get Along? No single format has yet been established as the standard, e.g., there's no eBook "VHS" format, like when VHS videotapes beat out Sony Betamax. Why not? This is a volatile market--just see some lively debate at Teleread, a blog that follows eBook issues closely.
The Need to ReadIf you want to be sure you always have an eBook on hand, Project Gutenberg provides a variety of DRM-free formats, including free EPUB format eBooks for download. These can be read on quite a few "devices" like compatible Sony readers, PC's Macs, etc. While not the latest bestsellers, many classic and enjoyable titles are available.
What Will the Future Bring? In light of the OverDrive EPUB format compatibility with Nook, Sony, and other eReaders, and with more EPUB format titles becoming available from publishers, we hope for lots more compatibility with other devices. Stay tuned.
