Cherrydale Celebrates 50 Years on Military Road

Be there Saturday, July 9 as the Cherrydale community celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Cherrydale Branch Library building on Military Road.

There will be a short ceremony at 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration including cake donated by Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe, the greatest hits and notable books of 1961, a giant birthday card and a display of vintage photos of the Cherrydale Library.

There will also have balloons, face painting and an exhibit of art created by Taylor School students.

At 2:00 p.m., elementary school students can attend Kofi Dennis Djembe Storytelling, part of our summer Get Caught Reading performance series.
Free tickets for this performance will be available on first come, first serve basis, beginning Friday, July 8.

The founding of the first library in Cherrydale was underway in 1922, and by the following year the Cherrydale League of Women Voters had opened the Cherrydale Community Library in a room at the old Cherrydale School on Lee Highway. You can learn more about the evolution of the Arlington Public Library in our upcoming 75th Anniversary Timeline, to be posted in July.
