Happy 298th Birthday to John Newbery!
John Newbery, an 18th-century bookseller born July 19, 1713, is commonly believed to be the originator of books for children - the first books designed to give real pleasure as well as instruction. The Newbery Medal, which bears his name, is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year.
This year's winner was Clare Vanderpool's Moon Over Manifest, a story about twelve-year-old Abilene Tucker. The daughter of a drifter, she is sent away for a summer to stay with a friend in Manifest, Kansas where her father grew up. There she soon discovers that the sleepy little town is full of colorful characters and long-held secrets. And the more she digs, the more she learns about her father's past and the role he played in the towns history.
Check out some of the past Newbery winners too - none of them disappoint!
