Happy 103rd Birthday Taro Yashima!


Wednesday, September 21 is the birthday of Japanese artist and children's author Taro Yashima.

Taro Yashima learned to appreciate art from an early age. Born in Kagoshima, Japan, his father collected artwork and encouraged his son to study at the Imperial Art Academy in Tokyo. He began writing children's stories after moving to the United States when his daughter became ill with stomach ulcers and he wanted to create something to ease her pain. He was a natural storyteller and the stories he wrote for his daughter about his childhood in Japan were quickly published. Crow Boy was awarded the Caldecott Honor in 1956.
