Author Talk: Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Tonight with "Detour Berlin"

Celebrate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month at the Central Library when local author Ruth Baja Williams reads from her memoir, Detour Berlin, on Thursday May 27, from 7:00 ? 8:30 p.m.

The 1961 Berlin Crisis brought Williams, a Filipina, and her African-American husband to West Berlin. Caught up in the atmosphere of danger - five Russian divisions lurked nearby - and daring - escapes from East Berlin happened daily - Ruth was entranced by her new home. Through the eyes of an outsider, ?Detour Berlin? portrays daily life in the divided city that epitomized the conflicts of the Cold War.

Learn more about Ruth in this 2008 youtube video interview by the Fairfax County Asian American History Project, in which she speaks about her confusing experience enrolling her mixed-race children in the Fairfax County Public Schools after living in Berlin.
