Arlington Learning in Retirement Institute presents the documentary The Desert of Forbidden Art: How Art Survives in Times of Oppression, Monday, Dec. 5, at 3:00 p.m. in the Central Library Auditorium.
This extraordinary film traces the incredible story of a daring visionary, Igor Savitsky, a young archeologist (and frustrated painter), who rescued more than 40,000 banned Soviet Union paintings and hid the illegal collection from the KGB in a museum he created in the desert of Uzbekistan. He obtains funding from the same authorities who are banning the art and amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917 developing a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions. Directed by Amanda Pope and Tchavdar Georgiev, Not rated, 80 Minutes.
This film is co-sponsored by the Arlington Learning in Retirement Institute. For more information call 703-228-2144, option 3.
