Garden Talk: Starting Fall Vegetables

Squash
Join us Wednesdays 7:00 p.m. at the Central Library Vegetable Garden for our August Garden Talk series.

August 3, 7pm - Summer veggies and herbs: Cooking straight from the garden. We?ll see, smell and taste some of the great vegetables and herbs of summer with Puwen Lee of AFAC and the Library gardeners! Come see how to grow, harvest, and use tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplants, cucumbers, summer squash, basil, and other plants of the summer garden. It doesn?t get any fresher than straight from the garden!

August 10, 7pm - Training your vegetables: trellises, ties, and other garden structures (Hanson Gildemeister and company). Learn all about what you may not know about selecting, designing, and implementing trellis and staking systems for your vegetables! Making the most of small spaces and keeping developing harvests out of harm?s way, these supports are key to intensive gardening. See several examples with hands-on demonstrations.

August 17, 7pm - Harvesting summer vegetables and starting fall vegetables! With free seedlings to plant for fall harvest. Join Don Weber, USDA-ARS Entomologist, to learn how, in the midst of the summer harvest, just a few minutes planting will reward you in September, October, and even November! You can extend your gardening with easy, nutritious fall-harvested crops. Our mild climate allows excellent late-season yields of broccoli, cabbage, bok choi, carrots, lettuce, spinach, and many other vegetables.

Talks last 30-45 minutes with time for questions.
