In 1980, while working on various covert-ops committees, he develops an interest in the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, especially after a visit to Afghan refugee camps. Together with a wealthy Houston socialite, and a maverick CIA agent, he creates a covert mission aimed at arming and training the mujahideen to defeat the Soviets. R
