The Iowa Caucuses
For our November program the OPL?s Reminisce Society is pleased to have Humanities Iowa speaker, Michael Glover, present the program, ?The Iowa Caucuses,? on
Tuesday, November 24, at 10:00 a.m. in the library?s meeting room.
Mike Glover spent 40 years covering politics as a journalist for newspapers in Illinois and Iowa, with most of his reporting career spent with The Associated Press. He has covered the Iowa Caucuses as they've evolved from local partisan affairs to the all-important, make-or-break events they are today. During presidential election cycles, he was part of the travelling press for The AP, covering candidates from Jesse Jackson to George W. Bush, and including extensive stints covering Al Gore, John McCain, and John Kerry. His work for The AP also included extensive coverage of the Iowa Legislature and state politics, where he's seen the nature of the Iowa political scene change over the past several decades.
He was also a regular panellist on the Iowa Public Television series "Iowa Press" for 30 years, interviewing county officials and presidential candidates alike for a statewide audience. He has also moderated debates, hosted special election series, and he is frequently called upon to offer insight and analysis about Iowa politics on national networks, including MSNBC, CNN, CSPAN, and others. He is also a frequent speaker for professional organizations, civic groups, educational settings, and other venues. He retired from The AP in mid-2012, and has worked as a freelance writer and reporter in his retirement.
Glover has an undergraduate degree from Western Illinois University and a Master's degree from Drake University. A native of Clinton, Illinois, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam in the Air Force prior to his time at Western Illinois. He lives with his wife, Betty, in Windsor Heights.
The Ottumwa Public Library has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to host this presentation. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa?s communities.
Plan to join us on Tuesday, November 24, for a fascinating glimpse into Iowa?s culture. Reminisce Society programs are free and open to everyone. If you are a person with a disability who requires special assistance or for further information, please call the library?s director, Sonja Ferrell at 641-682-7563, extension 202.
