Who's Your Favorite Sleuth?
Got a favorite private eye? Is it really elementary, my dear Watson? And, did the butler do it? This month the Westover Branch Library's Book Whisperers recommend our favorite detective and mystery books to each other. This is your opportunity to spread the word about a favorite author in the world of detectives, mysteries, thrillers and police procedurals.
Bring titles and description of your picks to the July Book Whisperer's meeting, on Tuesday, July 22 at 7 p.m., or Wednesday, July 23 at 2 p.m.Here are two of our favorites:
- A Share in Death, by Deborah Crombie.
Have you ever felt like you just couldn't wait for your vacation to start? Beware! That's exactly how Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid felt as he headed for a luxurious time-share in Scotland. No sooner does he arrive than a body turns up in the hot tub. Should he reveal his real profession to the owners of the estate? Will he manage to stay uninvolved? This first volume in a 13 book series about witty, urbane and handsome Kincaid also features his sidekick, Sgt. Gemma Jones, a feisty, no-nonsense single mother who knows how to take her superior down a peg or two.
Who would have thought that a Texan could write such a convincing cozy British mystery? You'll want to read this series in order, since Duncan's and Gemma's off-duty lives form another story altogether.
- Tsar, by Ted Bell
Alex Hawke, the British secret agent in Ted Bell's spy/thriller novels, has been described by many publishers' reviews as the "New James Bond." The direct descendent of a notorious English pirate, Hawke has the requisite attributes of a dashing hero - he's handsome, wealthy, intelligent daring, dangerous and of course, irresistible to women. "Tsar," the fifth novel in the series, finds Hawke in Russia, combating an evil government that has locked Vladmir Putin in a prison located over a radioactive waste site. The antagonist, Count Ivan Korsakov, evil mastermind extraordinaire, has lofty Tsar-like aspirations, but Hawke is on a mission to crush his evil plans. Of course, an alluring female steps in to entice Alex away from his mission - none other than the Korsakov's daughter.
Tsar delivers lots of action, larger-than-life scenarios, dastardly villains, murder, excitement and a feast of cliff-hanging events. Aficionados of the thriller/spy genre will enjoy the Alex Hawke books.
