You're Never too Old - or Young - to Learn Something New at the Library

Voting is now open for the 2010 ABBIE awards, and for the second year in a row, the Arlington Public Library has been nominated in the category of Best Place to Learn Something New.

Sure, the Library has always been the place to get free books, music and movies. But the Library also provides endless learning opportunities for all ages.

Here are 9 examples of things you and your family can learn for FREE at the Arlington Public Library:

1. What's going on today in Fredericksburg or Indonesia?
Read papers online in their original and unedited forms - Library.PressDisplay.com allows you to flip through the pages of virtual newspapers, while the Newseum's Front Pages site provides the front pages of papers from around the United

2. Which buildings in Arlington are haunted? When was the Nazi Party in Arlington?
Learn local history in the Virginia Room, on Our Back Pages, or at Arlington Historical Society lectures.

3. What's going on in Arlington, Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland?
Get hyper-local news when you log onto one of our free public PCs and go to any online news sources such as ARLnow, TBD, and the BallstonPatch.

4. Learn to Speak Mandarin, Greek or Tagalog!
Check out our learn-a-language CDs and DVDs, or study online with Mango Languages and Little Pim (Mango for kids).

5. There's lots for babies and kids to learn, too!
Give your preschoolers the building block of early literacy with our weekly storytimes, and encourage their independent word-recognition with Tumblebooks. Then when it's time for homework, we've got tons of books to check out, and a Homework Help Research Portal to use online.

6. Study for the LSAT or the Firefighter Exam (or both).
Check out one of our exam-prep books, or use LearningExpress Library online to take practice tests for exams in U.S. Citizenship, Civil Service, ASVAB, Cosmetology, Firefighter, Postal Worker, Real Estate Broker, and more. Academic tests include ACT, SAT, GED, Basic Skills, and more.
7. Learn to use a digital camera, then email your photos to friends and family.
Our CyberCenter classes cover everything from how to use your keyboards and mouse, to Excel spreadsheet and social networking.

8. Expand your horizon with American Revolutionary War 101, Cryptozoology or Dog & Cat First Aid.
We offer adults and kids 500 free online courses through Universal Class - everything from accounting to yoga (and a whole lot in between).

9. Need to know something specific, like how many square feet are in an acre? Or the title of The 39 Clues, Book 5?
Our librarians provide expert information - in person, over the phone, via email and instant message.

We think that you never outgrow your Library. If you agree, cast your vote by Monday, Nov. 8, 2010!
